The year 2024 brings a number of important legislative changes for companies and consumers in Germany. Some should simplify our everyday lives, some should ensure greater justice, environmental protection or quality of life. We have listed the most important new laws and changes for you:
Increasing the standard rates of citizens' benefits: As of January 1, 2024, the standard rates of citizen benefits will rise. From January, single adults will receive 563 euros a month, which represents an increase of 61 euros compared to the previous rate.
Partial legalization of cannabis: The planned partial legalization of cannabis comes into force in spring 2024. An exact date is not yet known — at the current time (November 2023), the Bundestag has named April 1 as the cut-off date. Adults can then legally own up to 25 grams of cannabis and grow up to three plants at home.
Adjustments to the promotion of e-cars: From 2024, the funding for e-cars will change. The federal share of funding for e-cars with a net list price of up to 45,000 euros is then 3,000 euros instead of 4,000 euros. Vehicles with a higher net list price will no longer receive funding.
New income limit for parental allowance: From April 1, 2024, the tax income limit for couples will be reduced from 300,000 euros to 200,000 euros. Anyone who earns a higher income together will no longer receive parental benefits.
Increasing the disability pension: From July 2024, there will be an increase in the disability pension, depending on the start of retirement. There is a supplement of 7.5 percent for pensions that began between 2001 and June 2014.
Building Energy Act (GEG): For most new buildings, heating systems with 65 percent renewable energy must be installed from January 2024.
Obligation to issue prescriptions electronically: From January 1, 2024, contract doctors will be required to issue electronic prescriptions for prescription drugs.
